Department of Sociology

At the undergraduate level, our department offers Social Elective courses in fields such as Sociology, History, and Philosophy—and their subfields—to all departments of our university. The aim of these courses is to bring academic disciplines from diverse fields, with their original and contemporary approaches, together with the entire student body. The fundamental principles of this aim are to educate competent, independent individuals equipped with knowledge and cultural awareness of social institutions within university education, and to foster interdisciplinary communication among differentiated fields of knowledge.

About the Department

Starting with the 2003–2004 academic year, Yıldız Technical University has implemented a general education program that is gaining widespread acceptance worldwide within modern education systems and has been implemented in various forms in our country as well. Within the framework of this program, YTÜ students take one Required General Education course and one University Elective course throughout their studies. The purpose of these courses is to introduce the entire student body to academic disciplines—including Sociology, Psychology, History, Anthropology, Philosophy, and various fields within their sub-disciplines—through original and contemporary approaches, within the framework of their fundamental methods and content. The fundamental principles of this objective are to cultivate individuals who are competent, independent, and possess broad life experiences, as well as knowledge and cultural literacy regarding social institutions; to facilitate communication across diverse fields of knowledge; and to prioritize social benefit.

The general education program, which was implemented under the Rector’s Office in the 2003–2004 academic year and coordinated by the Department of History at YTÜ’s Faculty of Science and Letters, was consolidated within the Department of Human and Social Sciences, established in July 2006.

In addition to the University Social Elective courses it offers to undergraduate students, our department has also been offering graduate programs since the 2010–2011 academic year.
