ECTS Credit Distribution
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is a student-centered credit system based on the student’s workload. It is a value that represents all the work a student must complete to successfully finish a course and achieve the specified learning outcomes (theoretical lectures, practical work, seminars, individual study, exams, assignments, etc.).
Every course offered at Yıldız Technical University has both local and ECTS credits. A course’s local credit is calculated as the total number of weekly theoretical lecture hours plus half of the weekly hours spent in laboratories, practicals, workshops, or studios.
Originally designed for credit transfer, this system is also used as a credit accumulation system at the institutional, regional, national, and European levels. For courses approved by the Senate as not contributing to grade point averages, no credit hour value is determined. For these courses, only the weekly theoretical and practical hours are specified.
After the learning outcomes for each course are determined, the workload required for students to succeed and achieve these learning outcomes is calculated.
In the work conducted for the ECTS credit distribution, the workloads required for students to succeed were estimated by the relevant faculty members. Students’ workloads were measured through evaluation surveys conducted at the end of each semester.
At YTÜ, students are required to successfully complete at least 30 ECTS credits to complete a semester (a total of 16 weeks, including exam periods). 30 ECTS credits correspond to a workload of 750–900 hours, encompassing all activities students undertake during the semester (class hours, homework, projects, midterms, finals, etc.).
The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated based on students’ local credits and grades. However, both local credits and grades, as well as ECTS credits and grades, are shown on students’ transcripts.
